Where to find Elizabeth Hiddleson books

I've had one follower ask about where to find some of Mrs. Hiddleson's books.

Jennie Gaskins of CountryYarns writes on her site:     "Mrs. Hiddleson designed beautiful thread doilies, tablecloths, motifs, chair sets, filet pieces, etc. during a large part of her life. We're fortunate that she decided to publish her patterns. They were available through mail order; if you have some earlier Workbasket magazines you will undoubtedly recognize one of her leaflets advertised in it! Her directions may not be for the faint-hearted crocheter, since she wrote them during a time when many crocheters were expected to "read between the lines" but don't let that put you off trying them! All patterns are accompanied by good sharp black and white photos with close-ups of the work when she thought it would be useful; the filet pieces are not charted but worked from the actual piece. Most of her designs were done in size 20 or size 30 thread, but of course any size thread can be used - the finished size will vary. All of the volumes have a basic crochet tutorial and sometimes instructions on special techniques such as hairpin lace."

Mrs. Hiddleson is no longer living.

Jennie has a good collection of books as well as some single patterns that are available.  Click on Country Yarns above to go to her website.  I have also seen used books being sold from time to time on Ebay and Etsy for those interested.

What am I working on??

I'm currently working on an Elizabeth Hiddleson design called "Mountain Trail".  It can be found in Volumn 38 of her publications.  Below is the front cover of the book and a picture of the doily from the book.  Instructions say it will be 22 inches made with #30 thread and 24 inches made with #20 thread.  I chose #20 Lizbeth thread in a shade of green.
I'm currently on row #31 and there are 47 rows to the pattern.  Even though I do crochet tight, I'm thinking it's going to be a little larger than 24 inches.   It will definitely be a "tabletopper"!

Something pretty doily

This pattern was found on Picasa somewhere.  I didn't know the location. I'm not even sure I haven't made this one before, but I so love the pattern. It was made with Lizbeth #20 thread, #10 hook and measures 14 1/2 inches across.  It's such a pretty pattern to me!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek.

Crocheting with graphs

So you found a doily pattern on the web somewhere, only trouble is it's a graph and from a foreign publication.  Your unsure of yourself in looking at the pattern.  Some of the stitches look unfamiliar, so you pass over it even though you really, really like the pattern.

WELL, I've found a website that might help some of you.

The link is http://www.rakuten.ne.jp/gold/gosyo/lesson/kagi.htm

It's not in English, but that doesn't really matter.  Just click any square with a crochet symbol in it.  A video will come up to watch showing how the stitch is made.  If you don't understand the language, don't worry; the couple videos I have watched are good.  There is a second page; just click on the link next to the small red arrow at the bottom of the page to the right.    This is definitely a link you will want to save in your favorites.

A good way to view the website is with a translation.  If you don't have an "English Translate" URL in your favorites, why not add one.  Go here    http://translate.google.com/translate_buttons  and follow the directions

THEN, when you are on a web page and would like to translate it into English, just choose this from your Favorites, and instantly it's translated into English.  I've used it for some time and find it quite helpful!!

Have a great day!

Sunflower Doily

I had made this doily previously in red and white.  You can see my post HERE.  In flipping through some of my older Magic Crochet magazines, I found the same pattern in issue #65.  Here's a picture of the doily from the magazine.
Maybe some of you doily lovers have this issue of Magic Crochet.  I really like it in yellow and white...also, notice how they made a change in color at a different point than I did.  I like this also.  May have to make this one again.

Vintage Pineapple Doily

I present to you a vintage doily simply called "Pineapple Doily".  It was made with Lizbeth #20 thread using a #10 hook and measures 19 inches across.    Here is where I first mentioned this doily with a copy of the 1914 publication it is from along with a copy of the picture of the doily in the book.   It was not a difficult doily to do, just a lot of pineapple tips to complete individually.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

Pineapple Doily

The pineapple doily from the vintage book Bucilla Crochet No 1 is COMPLETE!   I first shared the start of this one here on my blog.   I ended up making it in a solid color.   I've gotten it blocked, but it's too late in the day when I get in to take a half way decent picture during the week.  Hopefully we will have some nice days this weekend and I can share it with you.

It turned out beautiful in the one color!  It's currently "resting" on the foot of a bed all blocked and ready to be spotlighted.  I can't help but admire it each time I walk by!
