Jasmine

This doily is called Jasmine and can be found in issue #120 from June 1999 of Magic Crochet.  It was made with #20 thread using a #10 hook and measures 19 inches across.  I think the Bruges crochet lace makes it an outstanding doily.

Tapete Bicolor doily

This doily comes from  a magazine series called "Ganchillo".  You will find many of them on Picasa.  It was made with #10 thread using a #8 hook and measures 17 inches across.

 

 

The outter edge reminds me of Bruges lace crochet.

A new look

With this being the Christmas season I decided to do a quick change in my background and header.  The header is made up of four Christmas theme doilies I've made.  I found the poka dots in an image on line and after some playing around in Adobe Photoshop, I was able to make it into a background wallpaper for the blog.

Now the blog goes along with the season.

Christmas Tree Doily

Thought I would share a project from a couple of years ago.  I so love this doily!  I know I've made 4 or 5 of them to date for friends.  In fact, I don't think I even have one in my personal collection.  I will definitely have to make myself one soon! 

The pattern comes from a little magazine called Annie's Favorite Crochet (some of you probably remember it) and was in the December 2004 issue.  It was actually all in white in the magazine, and the last round was more like shells.

Over the years I've changed the last round to what  you see in these pictures.

Possible edging

I was looking thru my electronic files of a "zillion" patterns/books/magazines I have collected over the years and found this picture.  I immediately thought of substituting the cloth center for the poinsettia tapestry center.  Changing the red thread to green in the edging, and changing the gold to red.  Wouldn't that be pretty!

Current project-Vintage Pineapple Doily

Well, the decision was made.  It will be ONE color.  After the previous post I continued on with white as the 2nd color, but it just didn't look "right".  I finally decided this pattern is so delicate and detailed looking it needed to be only one color.  I "frogged" all the white out and picked back up the primary color.  Five additional rows have been completed and it looks so much better.

Thanks to everyone that left a comment on my dilemma!  I definitely will be making this one again in white.

An opinion please....

I'm currently working on a very old vintage pattern simply called Pineapple Doily from a 1914 publication.  Here's the front cover of the book along with a picture of the finished doily in the book.

I seem to be into some color right now, so initially I decided to do this one in color.....then thought about two colors.  I choose Lizbeth #20, color #657 for the center and white for the outter part.  I've finished the center part and started the white.  The center was trying to ripple some, so I stopped and blocked it to see what the final doily would look like.  Here's what I've got.   Now I'm doubting myself on the two colors.

 

Question, should I continue with the Lizbeth color #657 and make it a one color doily, or continue with white and have a two-tone doily?    I'm just not sure. It's such a stunning vintage doily!

I present to you the "Poinsettia Tapestry Doily"

This was my first attempt at the tapestry crochet stitch.  I'm really pleased at how it turned out.  It was made with #10 thread using a #9 hook, and measures 17 1/2 inches from point to point.  As I said before, the outter edging of pineapples was duplicated from a photo of a finished doily I saw on the web.  This is also my first attempt at crocheting from a photo of a finished piece and not an actual pattern.

 

This one is a gift to a dear friend, but I will definitely be making another one for myself!

Poinsettia Tapestry Doily is complete

I've finshed the Poinsettia Tapestry Doily and I must say I'm well pleased with the crocheted edging around it.  Well, it's more than just an "edging".  It's actually pineapples around it....and to think, I was able to successfully complete this part by only looking at an online photo!   That's a 1st for me!   Now to get it blocked and posted sometime this weekend.

Background Change

I figured out how to change the background on my blog and am using a collage of doilies I made back around the 4th of July, all in red, white and blue.  My mind is thinking ahead....make a collage of red, green, and white pieces to use during the Christmas season, another one for Easter, another one spotlighting doilies by a specific designer that you have made.   The possibilities are endless!

Poinsettia Tapestry Doily update

I'm about 50% complete with the outer crochet section.  As I said before, I don't have a pattern for this part, only saw a finished doily with this edging on another blog and really like it.   I'm attempting to duplicate the edging from the photograph.

My current project

I've never done the tapestry stitch in crochet, but just fell in love with this center when I came across it on the web.

I have a couple of more founds to finish the tapestry part and then I need to figure out what I'm going to do on the outstide.  The one I saw on the web had a very simple pattern around the outside, BUT I did see another version on a blog where the outer edge was pineapples.  There was no pattern, only a picture of the finished doily.  I think I'm going to try my hand at duplicating the pineapple pattern from the picture.

The tapestry stitch is really simple, but does take some coordination to manage all the different threads, since you are carrying them along within the stitches you are making rather than cutting the thread each time  you need to change colors.

 



 This one will be a gift to a dear friend, but I do plan on making another one for myself.

11/29/12 update.  Found where the pattern came from...it actually came from a magazine that had been shared with me called Mailles, and was issue 11.

Swinging Bells Doily

A design by Jo Ann Maxwell called "Swinging Bells".  It's from the American School of Needlework publication called The Ultimate Doily Book.  It was made with #10 thread and #8 hook.  The finished piece measures 14 1/2 inches across.  I thought the final row done in a gold thread added a extra touch to the piece.  Do you see the bells??

Last doily posted

One of my followers asked about the last doily  made, and the publication it came from.  The patterns in the book are chart form.  Although I can't read the language, I can read pattern charts.  Charts are basically the same regardless of the language of the book.  You need to just look at the number of rows in the chart and decide what size thread and size hook you want to use.  That's all there is to it!
